Openings
I have chosen openings as my project choice as it interests me the most at first. I feel as though I could work well with the idea of openings and achieve more. When looking on Pinterest at some photos of different peoples versions of this, it shows me that a lot can be done with the idea of ‘openings’.
Shizuka yokomizo stranger no.1 1998
Assessment
Paragraph 1: when looking at this image I can see a tall, middle age man on the phone and this picture looks to be taken through a window as that is the boarder of the picture, the image includes colour but can be seen as dull. This photograph looks to be taken at night as the boarder of the image(window) is very dark but inside the room light is present and therefore the image can be seen clearly. Most of the space in this image is filled and there is very little blank spaces which adds structure to the image and gives the viewer more to look at and think about. The man in the image looks to be looking directly at the camera, however the image as a whole is very mysterious and looks to be taken outside of the propertyat night time, so this gives an illusion that maybe the man is unaware that he is being photographed. As well as that the image quality looks very good for the time I believe this was taken in, I think this because the room this picture looks to be taken in gives off outdated vibes and therefore this gives the viewer more questions which is one of the ideas about photography. This portrait is very different to what I would have had in my head but I believe that it is more interesting to look at. I believe it’s different because the image has not been taken as most people would believe a portrait to look like it has more space and very different composition to an original portrait of a human. The mood and atmosphere is mysterious and maybe in some cases scary as the man hasn’t got much of an expression on his face and there are no bright lively colours present.
Paragraph 2: I believe that Shizuka Yokomizo had a clear idea of how she wanted the image to come across to the viewers. I think this because the photograph is in focus which can add suspense in a low mood photograph like this one. As well as that I believe that there was clear intent when creating this image as the main focus of the image is central and does not overlap the boarder that is created by the window. If I was asked to create my own version of this picture I was use a high quality camera also I was use a tripod so that I could get sharp angles just as the photograph has done here. I would also maybe edit the lighter parts of the image so there was a clear way in which I have shown the difference between light and dark in this image.
Paragraph 3: This picture makes me feel quite uneasy in a way that is difficult to describe there seems to be no clear intent for how this picture should make someone feel as there is lots of different aspects to the image and each of these aspects something different can be interpreted from therefore the image doesn’t make me feel one specific emotion and I believe that maybe that is the whole idea of this mysterious image. I don’t dislike the image I believe that it has a lot more to it than what first comes across and that’s the reason it interests me. If I could ask the photographer three questions about their image it would be, “ what made you want to have the man in the image to be on the phone and expressionless?” “What made you want the images focus to be central in the photograph?” And finally “ whatmade you want the image to be taken through a window?”
Paragraph 4: After researching about this photographer, I have more of an understanding about the unusual aspect of her creation. This photograph is part of a project called strangers and this explains when the man may be expressionless due to the fact that this photographer has said that she does not know these people she is photographing. This photo project came from “ running around London with huge telephoto lens trying to glimpse unexpected people through windows”. This also explains why it can be linked to the idea of openings as the photographer likes her pictures to be taken through windows. Overall now I have a much clearer understanding of the picture and also to photographer and I think her work is very creative and unique. I believe that her work will play a huge part of my project openings.
my own INTERPRETATION
When creating my own version of this photograph I tried a similar but different approach, I used the idea of having a boarder that gives the photo more context and texture but i believe my pictures may give off a different vibe to what Shizuka Yokomizo was maybe going for. When viewing and writing about her photograph I got dark and mysterious vibes whereas when I was creating my pictures I got light and more inviting vibes, however this may come off very differently to someone that views my image for the first time.
WWW: when creating the images I think that the idea behind the picture is very abstract and that gives the viewer more to think about. However it’s not as abstract as the original photo I was recreating. As well as that I think the whole idea of a boarder around the edges of the picture I created was good this is were my photo links to my idea of openings and also links back to the original picture as that is one of the main features in Shizuka Yokomizos image.
EBI: I think that if I was to create a picture more similar to the original photographer I would create more of a deep, darker picture for example less exposure and deeper colours to make it almost impossible to tell what the original idea was behind the photo this leaves the viewer with more to think about and eventually draws them in more.

Similar imagEs
These are some more images that I found on Pinterest and link very closely to the idea of openings and abstraction, also they have very similar vibes to Shizuka Yokomizo photograph. This draws me to them more due to the idea of not knowing the idea behind the images and also the dark and sometimes eerie vibes that they give off.
